Who We Are

For more than a decade Spark has been working to improve lives around the world.

We have pioneered an approach that is 100% village-driven and places decision-making power in the hands of those most affected by poverty.

Our Vision

A World where everyone lives with dignity and determines their own positive future.

From Vision to Reality

Since 2010 we have opened opportunities for more than a million people in six countries through our unique cash and village planning process. Through continued testing and improvements, our process has shown to produce sustained impacts over 10 years and longer.

Spark’s approach costs less than $30/person, making it scalable nation-wide. This is a fraction of the cost of comparative approaches.

Our Team

The majority of Spark’s team lives close to the villages they serve and work daily with government partners at the village and national level.  We continue to grow our staff to serve more people across the globe.

Our Values

  • A large group of people gathered outdoors in a hilly landscape, with some standing and others sitting or watching, during daylight. The group includes women in colorful dresses and headscarves, and a few children, in front of a tree and rural buildings, with hills and scattered houses in the background.

    Community Comes First

We believe people are stronger together. Spark creates space for all members of village to define a shared vision and make progress collectively to achieve lasting change.

    Process is powerful.

Our process channels the immense diversity of human potential to transform livelihoods in every village. Our results prove the power of a village-led approach.

    Dynamic becomes durable

We believe only flexible systems can achieve both short-term wins and lasting change. We continually test our process to ensure it will be durable over the long term.

Sparked Villages

The Spark Process was first tested in northern Rwanda in 2010. Since that time, we have worked with over 1300 villages in five countries.

Spark now has partners across Rwanda, Malawi, Uganda, Ghana and Burundi.
